30th Anniversary Celebration: Join Us in Honoring Douglas I. Katz, MD

Douglas I. Katz, MD, professor of neurology at the BU School of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Brain Injury Program at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital for over 25 years, will receive the Compassionate Care Award at our 30th Anniversary Celebration.

Katz said he’s “always been interested in how brain function relates to thinking, feeling and behaving, and how disorders of brain functioning lead to problems in these areas.” His mentor, during his fellowship, Michael Alexander, MD “was one of the leading experts thinking and writing about neurologic effects of TBI and recovery at that time, and he opened up this world of brain injury, cognitive neurology and neurorehabilitation for me.

“After my fellowship, I was delighted to have the opportunity in 1986 to continue working with Dr. Alexander, and join with Virginia Mills in leading the early development of the Brain Injury Program at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital, which was among the first of the few dedicated TBI programs in the US at the time.”

Katz says the most rewarding aspect of working in the field of brain injury has been “the opportunity to meet and be part of a fantastic community of professionals, survivors, families and friends in the brain injury world, including clinicians, researchers, teachers, advocates, administrators, and, most definitely, many courageous and inspiring patients and families I have come to know over the years.”

When asked about how he feels to receive the Compassionate Care Award this October, Katz says, “I am especially honored and somewhat humbled to be included among my fellow honorees, Inta Hall and Marilyn Spivack, who have been such major figures and forces in improving the lives of persons with brain injury over the years, even after challenges in their own lives.”
